paintedcows.com, the advertising and marketing resource, launched its website in November 1999 with an advertising world's first: an organic billboard.

The idea for advertising on live animals was born on a long train trip across America's heartland. Site co-founders, Shelley Delayne and Scott Karlson, speculated that all of those cows grazing along highways and byways are uniquely qualified as eye-catching advertising space.

The partners decided that this concept was to be the cornerstone of their efforts and rented a cow named Specs to become the world's first Ad Cow.

A real, live painted cow?!
Yes. Really.

Now, how DO we paint a cow?!

We paint a cow with sponges and non-toxic, water-based paint...

...and stencils and a little touching up with a brush.

Meet Specs. The world's first organic billboard, proudly sporting the Capitol Ford logo!

...and our URL on the other side.

Update: Sunday, November 28, 1999:

Spa day for Specs! Her career as a cow-board is over.

All cleaned up and hanging out with her friends!

Update: Saturday, January 1, 2000:

It's a Heifer!

On January 1, 2000, as a golden, warming sun rose over the mesa in Galisteo, New Mexico, Specs delivered the first calf of the "Moo Millennium"
Mille, short for millennium, and her mother are both doing great.

A special Thank Moo
to Specs' friends Linda and Johnny for all their help
to Linda and Danielle for helping to feed and care for Specs
to Joe for the Ad Corral and for fence-building instructions
And to Specs for being a good sport.

We at paintedcows.com are excited about our newest venture, this time in the world of wild animals. We expect this to present new and challenging opportunities. After all, wild animals are hard to catch, and they bite!
